FAQs

WHAT IS A SHOWCARD?
Showcards are original works of art combining photography and paint.
Each work in the collection is a hand-painted showcard— a unique work of art using hand-tinted photographs and paint to create dramatic, colorful compositions.
Showcards were commissioned to advertise the release of Bollywood films and displayed in cinema lobbies. As ephemeral objects, they were usually thrown out at the end of a movies’ run. The Hartwick Collection of Vintage Bollywood Art provides a rare and exceptional view of this little-known form of Bollywood advertising.
For a full description of showcards written by Dr. Deepali Dewan, curator of South Asian Visual Culture at the Royal Ontario Museum, see About in the main menu.

WHY DO SOME OF THE ARTWORKS LOOK 'WEATHERED'?
The artworks have retained the character of their rich history-- while some are in great condition, many have tattered corners, marks from rain splatter and mildew residue, and uneven hand-cut edges. These authentic imperfections give the artifacts another dimension both visually and historically. The works have been treated by the Royal Ontario Museum conservation team to prevent further damage.

To learn more about the history of these artworks, watch The Showcards, a short film documenting the origins of the collection.

ARE WORKS FROM THE HARTWICK COLLECTION AVAILABLE ON LOAN?
The Hartwick Collection lends artifacts to exhibitions in museums, galleries, and other venues with a commitment to meaningful educational, aesthetic, intellectual, and cultural experiences.
The Hartwick Collection also recognizes its role as caretaker of these cultural artifacts and will lend material only to institutions with facilities capable of exhibiting the items safely. A decision to lend will depend on several factors, including the condition of the object, its relevance to the exhibition, and the facilities of the borrowing institution. The Hartwick Collection will enter into loan agreements only when the conditions are met satisfactorily. Loan requests should be submitted with as much lead time as possible to ensure adequate preparation and processing time.

Limited Edition FAQs

WHAT IS A LIMITED EDITION?
A Limited Edition is a limited run of a particular piece of artwork. The number of prints specified is the maximum number of copies in which the showcard will be reproduced in its original format.
The Hartwick Collection editions are printed with the finest archival inks on 100% cotton rag paper. Each archival pigment print is hand-numbered and embossed on the lower left corner and is accompanied by a detailed sales receipt and certificate of authenticity.  Prints are published exclusively by The Hartwick Collection and are available for purchase solely through this website.
For more information on Vintage Bollywood Art editions, see Limited Editions in the main menu.

WHAT IS AN ARCHIVAL PIGMENT PRINT?
Archival pigment printing is a process which provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.
In archival pigment printing, no screen or other mechanical devices are used and therefore there is no visible dot screen pattern. By using this process, the image has all the tonalities and hues of the original artwork. Our archival pigment prints are printed on 100% cotton rag fine art paper, using fade-resistant, archival pigment-based inks.
Archival pigment printing is an industry accepted standard for fine art reproduction, seen throughout premier museums and galleries including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian.

WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE PRINT?
The dimensions listed for each artwork indicate the original showcard size. The dimensions of the print are the original showcard size plus a 5cm (2") border on all sides.

ARE THE COLORS OF THE ONLINE IMAGES EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE COLORS OF THE PRINT?
Colors and tones can vary between computer screens. While our screens are calibrated, meaning that they are regulated for color consistency and accuracy, some screens are not. Because of this, the art you receive may look slightly different than the image you see on your screen.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY PRINTS?
We recommend framing your art as soon as you receive it.  If you are not going to frame your art right away, we recommend storing it flat in a drawer in its archival sleeve, away from direct sun, heat and humidity. Your sales receipt and certificate of authenticity may be stored with your art or filed separately, but be sure to keep it in a safe place.  Always use white cotton or powder-free latex gloves when handling and avoid over-manipulating your prints.
We print on archival fine art paper and use archival pigment inks, thus ensuring the longevity of our prints.
